Advice

for

pet owners

WORMING

Broadly there are two types of worms that can causes problems

in dogs and cats. These are roundworms and tapeworms.  In adult

dogs and cats these worms only occasionally cause disease, usually

in debilitated animals. In puppies and kittens however these worms,

particularly roundworms, can cause serious problems.

Both types of worm can cause disease in humans, particularly children

We can provide worming treatment in a powdered or liquid form for small puppies and kittens, in tablet form for larger puppies and adult dogs and as a convenient spot-on for larger kittens and adult cats. All forms are dose dependant; therefore we will need to know the weight of your pet before prescribing any treatment.

Puppies and kittens should be wormed every month until 6 months of age

Adult animals should be wormed every 3 months throughout their life

FLEA TREATMENT

Dogs and cats share the same fleas so it is important that all pets

in the home are treated with appropriate medication. Furthermore the

life cycle of the flea and the tapeworm are inter-related therefore

animals that have fleas may also have tapeworms and vice versa.

Many cats and dogs will have fleas but will show no signs of scratching. Unfortunately, our homes provide an ideal environment (warmth and humidity) for the life stages of the flea to live and develop, which is why it is important to treat your home as well as your pet.

We can provide effective flea treatment in the form of a spot-on medication. It is also available in a spray form (mostly used in puppies and kittens rather than adults). We can provide you with a household spray to treat the home which, if used correctly and alongside regular flea treatment for your pet, will last up to 12 months.

Puppies and kittens can be treated for fleas with the spray from just 2 days old.

The spot-on can be used from 8 weeks old.

Dogs & cats should be treated for fleas every month, particularly in the warmer months (April – October).
