A FEW POINTS TO HELP YOUR NEW RABBIT SETTLE IN

When you first bring your rabbit home he/she will be in new surroundings, smells and around new company. Here are a few ways in order to reduce some of the stress your rabbit is feeling:

Do not over handle your rabbit to begin with – children need to be made aware that your rabbit is not a toy and should not be picked up all the time. They need time to settle in and to get used to the whole family. This will also help prevent any unwanted nipping or biting the rabbit may do due to it being frightened.

Try and be quiet around your rabbit. Do not make too much noise as this again can cause unnecessary stress.

Make sure your rabbit has somewhere to hide if they feel the need e.g. a cardboard box with hay in.

Give your rabbit a quiet time where they can just roam around in the designated area without having loads of people either walking by or watching them. This way they will calm down after the journey from the breeder or pet shop, which in itself can be very distressing for your rabbit.

The best way for your rabbit to get to know you is just to sit quietly near them so that they can come to you. Even if they are unsure to begin with, eventually they will want to explore and be curious about you. If they do come to see you do not move too suddenly as this will frighten your rabbit and they will run and hide again. Stay still whilst they investigate you and smell you. Once you feel they have relaxed a little, stroke them gently and slowly. Make sure they can see that you are about to stroke them, do not approach them from behind!

When you handle your new rabbit make sure they are handled correctly and that they feel secure

Most importantly remember that your new rabbit is in a new environment and may take some time to get used to the family. Be patient and they will learn to love you!
