CAT VACCINATIONS
Cat flu
Cat flu still affects an estimated 160,000 cats and kittens each year in the UK. It is a nasty viral disease that can cause severe flu-like symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, sore eyes, lethargy and anorexia. The disease is caused by two main viruses - Feline Calicivirus and Feline Herpesvirus. Some cats can be “carriers” of these viruses and can infect other cats, even if they have no outward signs of cat flu. Cat flu can prove fatal, especially in the vulnerable, and can lead to unpleasant long-term complications for affected cats. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of disease.
Feline enteritis
Also known as feline panleucopaenia or feline parvovirus, as it is very similar to canine parvovirus. The virus causes severe vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Sometimes the disease can progress so quickly that a cat may die before any signs are noticed. The virus survives outdoors for months or even years. Vaccination of cats will offer protection against feline enteritis.
Feline leukaemia
This virus suppresses the cat's immune system, leaving them extremely vulnerable to picking up other illnesses, and can cause cancer, anaemia, neurological problems and death. Spreads directly from the saliva of infected animals, to others they may meet and socialise with. Vaccination has proved effective in reducing this disease; a significant prevalence of infection in unvaccinated cats is reported.
